i sold some "toksic" items!! :)

it's been a while since i've actually given any of u an update on my fashion brand. well mashallah, TOKSIC has been doin pretty good.. :) i've sold quite a number of items and i just cant wait till i see someone wearin one of my items one day cos i'll probably run up to her screamin "THATS MY DESIGN! THATS MY DESIGN!" while jumpin excitedly(or skippin.. hoppin.. etc) loool! hahaha :) hopefully she wouldnt freak out ;) lol.

here are some of the sketches that i've done (on illustrator) and some of the items that have been sold (both, at amzaan boutique (in wafi city) and kube design (in burdubai).

i was on TV!! :)

well as u can tell from the heading, i was on TV!!! yaaaay!! :) i was on this show called NETCOM (jehad's show) on sama dubai which is basically about IT and technology and stuff.. i was there to talk about how, as a designer and a mixed media artist, i've learnt how to create art digitally and how i've benefited from technology in general by using photoshop, illustrator, etc.. i also demonstrated how i've created the homepage for my website using both, photoshop and photography (photos of ethnic prints from my collection).

i then sent an email to about 20 friends or so telling them about the show but the funny thing is the emails just magically turned into a forum!! lol! it was actually quite hilarious watching the emails go back and forth (but of course apologies to all those of u who didnt wish to be part of it all)..

anyway, if anyone's interested in reading what my crazy friends were on about, be my guest :)

fashion show at ESMOD - i was modelling :)

one of my university friends, aisha, is studying fashion at the french fashion university ESMOD (in the academic city (dubai) - close to zayed university). she had her final project due for the fall semester on the 20th of dec 2006. the theme was based on skirts, and each student had to model this skirt (or get someone else to model for it) in the fashion show. i ended up modelling for her :)

aisha's skirt was extremely creative as it was made out of blue plastic bags and black tulle. her sister's underskirt (for her wedding dress) was used as a base to give the whole thing extra volume. it was absolutely gorgeous! to an extent that she actually got an A++ for the design! she was the only one in her class to get that grade :)

anyway, this is what the skirt looked like:

the day was extremely hectic though but a lot of fun. we all had to be there at 10am while the show actually started at 8pm! so we basically spent about 10 hrs preparin for a show that took about 15mins in total lol :) and well i only slept for about 3 hrs the night before but thank god for red bull lol. a lot of fitting and adjustments had to be done, plus make-up and hair of course which ended up takin a lot of time as there were only 2 hairdressers and 1 make-up artist, while there were at least 30 girls waiting in line.

but all in all, it was a great experience :) mabrook aisha ;)

fashion conference at shangri la hotel

i've received an email invitation (in december) to an open round table discussion related to fashion that took place at the shangri la hotel on sheikh zayed road.

it was quite informative actually as topics revolved around:
- how the dubai market is changing in terms of fashion - "today's market is saturated with mono-brands" - engi shalhoub (CEO and managing director, etoile group);
- sustaining new fashion brands - "it's great to have style and to have a good collection, but how is one going to sustain it? it is therefore important to have a business plan" - zayan ghandour (co-owner of sauce boutique). "a designer can open his/her own store but it depends on his/her brand's performance and sustainability (mono-brand)" - shireen el khatib (GM of the fashion and jewellery division, al tayer group);
- the dubai international fashion week (DIFW) that should take place in march 2007 (how there would be a focus on new brands and local young talents, not only international designers, and how the new brands should not only be strong on the creative side but also commercially successful);
- some random quotes: "you can't buy taste"; "dubai doesn't need investors, investors need dubai".

some of my birthday presents - fashion books!

wow. it's been soooo long since i've added a new post here. anyway i got 2 really cool fashion books for my birthday this year (actually it was 2 months ago - in dec).. thought i'd share them with u all:

"fashion now (icons)" highlights the work of over 90 designers around the globe, focusing on not only the biggest names but also the most exciting new talent. also included are exclusive interviews, biographical information, photos of recent designs by today's leading photographers, and current catwalk shots.

"yeah! i made it myself: DIY fashion for the not very domestic goddess" is for anyone who loves the idea of creating their own clothes but is unsure of where or how to begin. this inspirational, fun and easy-to-follow book is the perfect accessory - the perfect antidote to the scary world of dress-making manuals.

a "must-read" for fashion branding & marketing

hey if anyone's interested to know more about fashion branding/marketing then i suggest u go and read "fashion brands - branding style from armani to zara" by mark tungate.. (i got my copy from virgin megastore at emirates mall, dubai).. anyway i really think that its a very interesting book.. im readin it these days .. still haven't finished it yet though.. anyway if u'd like to know more about it then here's a bit of the description of the book that's provided on the inside cover:

High street brands such as Zara, Topshop and H&M have made garments worthy of Prada and Gucci accessible to students and the mass market.
Sports brands such as Nike and Adidas have transformed the image of their products from practical sportswear to “hip” fashion, attracting customers who have no interest in sport.
How has this transformation occurred? Fashion Brands explores the popularization of fashion and explains how marketers and branding experts have turned clothes and accessories into objects of desire. Mark Tungate examines how the use of advertising and the media has altered our fashion “sense” and looks at how store design influences what we buy.

i also thought i'd share some quotes with u that i really liked:

"clothes and accessories are expressions of how we feel, how we see ourselves - and how we wish to be treated by others" - mark tungate himself.

"fashion is too prevalent to be considered trivial. even when you say you're not interested in fashion, you've been forced to confront it. fashion is everywhere. what you choose to wear or not to wear has become a political statement. you don't buy clothes - you buy an identity" - vincent peters (fashion photographer).

"traditional marketing is based one need. you take a product that corresponds to an existing demand, and attempt to prove that your product is the best in its category. but fashion is based on creating a need where, in reality, there is none. fashion is a factory that manufactures desire" - bruno remaury (fashion scholar) .

"i always have a hard time thinking of myself as a brand, even though i occasionally talk about this entity called 'paul smith', as if its not my own name. i got into this business because i loved it, then woke up one day and realised i was locked into this system of marketing. i suppose we'll just have to wait and see. the business is structured so that everything is taken care of, except my own personality" paul smith (the designer) on what will happen to paul smith, the brand, when paul smith, the designer himself, decides to retire.

hope this was useful to whoever's interested ;)

meet the mannequins

it's time for u for to become acquainted with the famous girls who were the first to try on “toksic”.. meet little red riding hood, cindrella and cruella de vil (from 101 dalmations) :)
i’m sure you’re wondering now where they got their names from.. well it’s pretty obvious from the photo isn’t it??

little red riding hood.. well.. she’s red lol can it be any more obvious?? and she’s “adjustable in size” which basically means that she has a very low metabolism - whatever she eats affects her weight tremendously and well i'm sure that she actually ate all the food that was in her basket that she "supposedly" took to her grandma’s house!! (and she probably ate the so-called "big bad wolf too!!" lol :)

cindrella.. well.. the resemblance is obvious with the short hair right? and look at her leg! she dropped it off somewhere just like cindrella dropped off her shoe!

and finally, cruella de vil.. well we all know that everyone hates her cos she kidnaps puppies to kill them for their fur.. and well look at her in that photo.. she’s got the perfect body like a model and well, as bad as this may sound, a lot of people hate models don’t they? hmm no i take that back lol. “hate” is such a strong word.. they don’t hate them it’s just jealousy i guess.. i’m sure her two other fellow mannequins (red riding hood and cindrella) are jealous like hell too and would like to poke her..

so u see.. their names make perfect sense.. well to me at least lol :) and who knows, maybe i have a certain connection with walt disney’s characters cos we do share the same star sign after all (he’s a sagittarian too).. that means something doesn’t it?? :) (and i was talking about walt disney here and not the cartoon characters lol).

oh well, just wanted to introduce “the girls” to u all.. i felt like it was my obligation or somethin.. like i owed it to them for makin them try on clothes all the time even if they didn’t like any of them lol :)

meet mr & mrs singer

well its time to meet the famous mr & mrs singer (originally from japan): the proud parents of “toksic”; my mother’s best friends; my tutors; our overlock and sawing machines :)

i just felt like i had to introduce them to the world.. without them there would be no “toksic”.. (mr singer is on the left and mrs singer is on the right)..

well they’ve had their good and bad days of course.. they loathe silk for example and any stretchable materials cos they always seem to get stuck in them.. they still make me proud though :) and whoever said machines have no souls and no minds of their own is completely wrong :)

merci people :)

well i thought the best way to start this blog was to actually thank all those people who've helped my new fashion brand "toksic" come to life.. (check out my website www.toksicdress.com). i think this is just a formal way of telling you all that i owe you bigtime (okay.. thats an overstatement.. hmm.. a cup of coffee maybe? lol.. but don't quote me on that!) :)

first of all i'd like to thank my mum of course for literally makin the "toksic" items "come to life" (for those of u who don't know it, my mum's actually the one who sawed/stitched the clothes. she made my designs come to life! :) and i helped a bit of course ;) lol; my dad of course for his encouragement to start my own thing (and lil bit of money too lol); my brother rami for proving to me that yes u can start ur own thing at an early stage of ur life if u put ur mind to it (he owns oxygen productions; official partner of white, beirut); alistair jameson for his patience! and extreme knowledge (mashallah ;) ) with html and all that linking stuff for actually placin my website on the net; diana hawatmeh for her encouragement and support from the start and her help in coming up with names and logos for my brand; amaal mostafa for deciding to start something else (design-related) with me soon as she loved my work and thought that we could do some great work together someday (more on that soon inshallah) which in turn lifted my spirits of course :) ; melissa bayik for spreading the word about my website which resulted in a friend (whom i haven't told about my site yet) knowing about it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from mel and in only a few hours! lol.. girls and gossip :) ; ahmed gamal for his thoughts and ideas from the start about brand names, exhibiting styles, etc; rhoda azizoghly for gettin really excited about my new brand - all the way from canada - and screaming excitedly in my ear when she first logged onto my website (miss u girl); samer issa for offering to put my website on the net using his expertise in flash ;) lol; raghda tantawi (in advance) for setting me up with a few exhibiting spots at hotels ;) ; nihal akmal for helping me come up with the tagline "dress to kill"; soha abdullah for makin me feel so good about myself when she asks me to join her shopping to give her tips and advice on styling; sara abdullah for her enthusiasm and for always being there to help out in any way possible by just makin phone calls to the right people ;) lol; and finally, last but not least, aisha al qasimi for suggesting places to sell my stuff at (despite the fact that she told me once about this place, (somewhere in burdubai) where i had to park miles away (cos of traffic of course), and ended up walkin (across a huuuge rounadabout too!) for at least 10 mins in the scorching sun, while i was fasting and thirsty as hell, only to find out that the place had shut down completely!! lol.

well i hope i didn't miss out anyone. if i did i'm so sorry but anyway a big thank u goes out to all my friends.. really.. (sorry for bein a lil cheesy lol).. but hey, i love u all!! ;)
